What is a fractional executive?

A fractional executive is a senior leader, such as a CFO, CTO, CMO or head of HR, who works part time for your company, usually a few days a month on a retainer. You get executive judgement and someone who answers for results, without paying a full-time executive salary.

Fractional executive meaning: a part-time leader, not a temp

Fractional means a fraction of someone's week. The same executive may serve three or four companies at once, and each gets a set share of their time.

A fractional CFO owns the numbers and the forecast. A fractional CTO owns technology choices and the people who build. A fractional CMO owns the marketing plan and its results. A fractional HR lead owns hiring, policies and employee files.

The word that matters is ownership. An executive sets direction, makes the call when options conflict, and answers for the outcome. That is what separates the role from a one-off adviser.

A fractional executive is one person, not a team. If you need the work made as well as directed, pair one with an agency or a senior team.

What a fractional executive costs in Canada

Published rates swing with scope, hours and city. Most come from firms that sell the service, so read them as directional, in dollars a month before tax. For scale, one Ontario CPA firm puts a full-time CFO's total pay at $185,000 to $310,000 a year.

When a fractional executive makes sense for a small business

Ask for a named person and a written 90-day plan.

  • You need senior judgement a few days a month, and a full salary would be too much.
  • You run a business of 5 to 30 people, and the decisions that matter on cash, technology or marketing sit with you.
  • A big decision is coming, such as a launch, a financing, a rebuild or a first senior hire.
  • Someone already makes the work, and nobody senior directs it.

When a fractional executive is the wrong choice

  • The work fills a full week, every week. Hire in-house.
  • You need the work made, not directed. You would pay once for the plan and again for the doing, so look at a team.
  • You need licensed advice. A fractional CFO does not replace your accountant, and a fractional counsel is a lawyer.
  • You cannot spare the time. Part-time leadership still needs an owner who joins the meetings.

Where Vesk fits

Vesk is not a fractional executive. It is a senior team: a lead plans the month with you, and senior specialists make the work, paid in tokens with a fixed size per task.

The two combine well. If someone senior sets your direction, Vesk can be the team that builds. See Vesk Software and Vesk Marketing, or the cost guides for custom software and a marketing agency. If you are choosing between a freelancer, an agency and a team to build, read freelancer, agency or team. In Canada Vesk contracts through APRed, and the senior team works from Mexico City. Frequently asked questions

What is a fractional executive?

A fractional executive is a senior leader, such as a CFO, CTO, CMO or head of HR, who works part time for a company on a retainer. They own decisions and results in their area without a full-time salary.

What do fractional CFO, CTO, CMO and HR mean?

Each is the part-time version of a chief role. A fractional CFO directs finance, a CTO technology, a CMO marketing, and an HR lead the people side. Each works a few days a month, usually across several clients.

How many hours a month does a fractional executive work?

An Ontario CPA firm describes fractional CFOs working two to ten days a month, and one fractional CTO vendor sells tiers of 5, 10 or 15 hours a week.

How is a fractional executive different from a consultant?

A fractional executive stays on, makes decisions and answers for the outcome. A consultant usually delivers a report or recommendation and leaves, so carrying it out is up to you.

How much does a fractional executive cost in Canada?

Published monthly rates run from about $3,500 to $14,000 for a fractional CFO, $8,000 to $16,000 for a fractional CTO and $5,000 to $10,000 CAD for a fractional CMO. Execution is usually billed separately.

Is Vesk a fractional executive service?

Vesk is not a fractional executive service. It is a senior team on a monthly token plan that plans and makes the work in software and marketing. It can work alongside a fractional executive who sets the direction.
