What a fractional CMO is
A fractional CMO is an experienced marketing leader who works for several businesses at once, a day or two a week for each. You get the judgement of someone who has run marketing before: who your customer is, what to say, which channels to back and what to stop. For a business that has outgrown improvising, that judgement is valuable.
What a fractional CMO usually does not do is the production. Someone still has to write, design, film, build the pages and run the ads. That is why the model fits best when you already have people or an agency to execute. For the wider picture, see what a fractional executive is.
What a fractional CMO costs in Canada
The median is about $5,000 to $10,000 CAD a month. Published ranges are wider, from about $6,000 to $13,700 a month, with Ontario rates higher, around $7,500 to $15,000 CAD. These are vendor-published figures, so treat them as directional. Execution is usually extra: the designer, the writer and the ad manager come on top.
For comparison, a full-time digital marketing manager in Toronto earns about $111,780 CAD a year at the midpoint, according to Robert Half. With payroll costs, benefits and equipment that is roughly $10,300 CAD a month, before any recruiting fee.
When a fractional CMO is the right hire
- You already have people who execute, in-house or at an agency, and nobody senior to direct them.
- You are weighing a large decision: a new market, a rebrand, a pricing change, a launch.
- Your marketing spend is big enough that a wrong call costs more than the retainer.
- You want a plan and an experienced second opinion more than you want things made.
If that is you, hire one. Ask for a named person, a written 90-day plan, and accounts that stay in your name.
Why a senior team that also executes is often the better buy
Most businesses with 5 to 30 people do not have a team waiting for direction. They have an owner and no one to make the posts, the pages and the campaigns. Pay for the plan and you then pay again for the doing, usually to a second supplier.
Vesk Marketing puts both in one plan. A senior lead plans the month with you in the monthly meeting, and senior specialists make the work: strategy, design, content and ad campaigns, each task quoted in tokens before it starts. Growth is $2,120 CAD a month plus tax, about a fifth of a loaded Toronto hire and below the low end of a fractional CMO retainer that leaves the making of the work to you.
The trade-offs are real. A senior lead on a small-business plan is not an executive embedded in your leadership team, and Vesk Marketing is in early access: the proof we can show today is Mittel.
In-house hire vs agency vs fractional CMO vs Vesk
All prices are monthly, in CAD, before tax. Agency and fractional figures come from published rates, not a survey, so read them as directional.
| In-house hire | Agency retainer | Fractional CMO | Vesk Marketing | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Typical cost | About $9,500 to $11,000 loaded (Toronto about $10,300), plus a recruiting fee of 15% to 25% of first-year salary | $2,500 to $5,000 is the most common small-business retainer | $5,000 to $10,000 median, execution usually extra | $1,010, $2,120 or $3,980, plus tax |
| Time to start | Two to four months to hire | Proposal, contract and onboarding | Weeks, depending on availability | First delivery in week 1 after the kickoff |
| What it covers | One person's skills, often one or two of design, copy, video and ads | Several channels, varies by agency | Strategy and direction; production extra | Strategy, design, content and ads, priced per task |
| Who answers for the result | You manage them | The account manager, within the contract scope | The CMO, for the plan | A senior lead you meet every month |
| Main risk | A wrong hire costs months and a fee | Billing by activity; long lock-in | A plan with no one to execute it | Early access; the team works from Mexico City |
| What you own | Everything | Depends: ask for accounts in your name | Depends: ask | Accounts, domains and profiles in your name from day one |
Hire in-house when you have a full week of marketing work, every week, and the role has to sit inside the business. Use an agency when work comes in waves, such as a rebrand or a launch. A marketing manager plus a monthly team for design and video is a sensible setup. What a marketing agency costs in Canada has the full ranges.
A month with Vesk: what the plans buy
Planning is included in every plan, with no tokens spent: the kickoff meeting, a monthly one-hour meeting with the senior lead, a weekly project update and the client platform on web and app. The making is priced in tokens, and unused tokens carry over to the next month, so each month is planned like a small budget:
| Plan | Tokens and price | A possible month |
|---|---|---|
| Starter | 8 tokens, $1,010 | Eight social posts, or two short videos, or one ad campaign |
| Growth | 20 tokens, $2,120 | A content calendar (4), eight posts (8) and two short videos (8) |
| Growth, launch month | 20 tokens, $2,120 | Ad campaign setup (8), campaign landing page (8), email campaign (3) and one post (1) |
| Scale | 40 tokens, $3,980 | Basic brand identity (15), ad campaign setup (8), campaign landing page (8), calendar (4) and five posts (5) |
Prices are monthly in CAD plus GST/HST. Ad spend is paid by you directly to Google or Meta, in your own ad account, and is not part of the plan. If you run out of tokens, extra tokens cost the plan's per-token price, or you can move up a plan for the month.
Who it suits, and what stays yours
It suits an owner-led business of 5 to 30 people that needs a steady flow of marketing and has no one to run it: a services firm, a clinic, a shop, a contractor. It also suits a business that was burned by an agency and wants everything visible this time. It does not suit an owner who cannot attend one meeting a month, or a company with enough work for a full-time team. We say so on the first call.
Domains, ad accounts, social profiles and files are in your name from day one, and a monthly plan cancels anytime. The first month is guaranteed: if it does not convince you, you get a full refund, plus 8 bonus tokens to try us with. In Canada, Vesk contracts through APRed in CAD, and the senior team is in Mexico City, one to two hours behind Toronto.
