Custom software development in Toronto: what we build
Toronto has more software agencies than almost anywhere in Canada, and plenty of owners who have paid one and been left with nothing that works. We start from that second group. If you have a broken app, an unfinished build or a vendor who went quiet, see our software rescue page.
If you are starting fresh, the typical jobs are the ones that save hours or win customers: a custom system that replaces ten subscriptions held together by spreadsheets, a client portal, an app for customers, or integrations between tools you already pay for. The software hub lists everything we do.
Where Toronto small businesses need custom software
Toronto and the wider GTA, from Mississauga and Brampton to Vaughan and Markham, run on small firms that sell services or move goods. The work that reaches us usually starts in one of these places:
- Professional services. Accountants, consultants and law offices keep clients, files and billing in three places. A single client system with a portal replaces the email chain.
- Clinics and wellness practices. Booking, reminders and records that do not talk to each other. Health information in Ontario falls under PHIPA, so we raise data questions in the kickoff meeting.
- Wholesalers and distributors in the GTA. Orders, inventory and invoicing spread across tools, often with QuickBooks at the centre.
- Online brands on Shopify. A store that outgrew its apps and needs inventory, fulfilment and accounting connected.
- Trades and home services. Quotes, dispatch and invoices from several systems, with the owner holding the glue.
App developers in Toronto: a team, not one person
Owners who search for app developers in Toronto usually find freelancers and agencies. A freelancer is one person who may disappear, and an agency prices the app as a project. With Vesk you get senior app developers working as one team on a monthly plan: a web app first, a mobile app when your customers will use it every week, and both published under your own Apple and Google accounts. See app development for small business for what a build looks like and what it costs.
Working across the Toronto day: hours, video and the Mexico City team
Our senior team is in Mexico City, which is on Central Standard Time all year. Toronto is 1 hour ahead in winter and 2 hours ahead in summer. A call at 9 in the morning in Toronto is 8 in Mexico City in winter and 7 in summer, so a meeting that starts your day works for us.
We do not have a Toronto office, and we do not pretend to. Calls, kickoff meetings and the monthly meeting with the senior lead happen over video, and you follow every task, bug and token in the platform on web and app. If you need someone sitting in your office every week, we are not the right team. If you want senior people who answer the same day, we are.
Software development costs in Toronto
The right comparison is not hourly. A Growth plan is $2,290 CAD a month for 20 tokens, which buys two complete features, or one integration plus two bug fixes plus two small changes. You can stop after any month. That is under a fifth of the loaded cost of a senior hire. To see what your own list of tasks would cost, use the token estimator.
| Option | Typical Toronto cost | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Toronto software agency | CAD 130 to 190 an hour, plus 20 to 40% for project management and QA | A team and a project quote. Changes are billed on top |
| Senior freelancer | CAD 125 to 190 an hour | One person, no team, and no one answering if they leave |
| Senior developer hire | About CAD 14,300 a month loaded, base pay around CAD 157,000 in the 2027 edition of Robert Half's Canada salary guide | One person, one discipline, plus recruiting fees and a search that takes months |
| Custom small-business project | CAD 50,000 to 125,000 or more | A fixed scope, often a long timeline |
| Vesk Software plan | CAD 1,270, 2,290 or 3,980 a month plus tax | A senior team, tokens priced per task, visible work and a guarantee |
Contract, billing and Ontario HST
You sign with APRed, our Canadian company, and every invoice is in Canadian dollars. In Ontario, HST is 13%, so a Starter plan of $1,270 CAD comes to about $1,435 with tax, Growth to about $2,588 and Scale to about $4,497. Monthly plans cancel anytime, annual plans add 2 extra months of tokens, and billing starts only after the kickoff meeting.
Code, infrastructure and accounts are in your name from day one, which makes it easy to check, hand over or move later. We do not make claims about tax incentives or grants. If you are considering SR&ED or a provincial program, ask your accountant first, because work done outside Canada generally does not qualify for SR&ED.
Privacy rules Toronto owners ask about
Toronto owners who hold client data ask the same question early: where does it live and who can see it? Federal privacy law (PIPEDA) and, for health information, Ontario's PHIPA both shape how you collect and keep personal information. The answers depend on your business, so the kickoff meeting is where we list what data the system will hold.
We do not claim certifications, and we do not claim that your data stays in Canada. If either one is a requirement for you or for your clients, say so on the first call and we will tell you plainly whether we fit.
Which of our projects apply in Toronto
We do not have a Toronto client to show, and we will not invent one. Three projects from our own work map to the kinds of problems Toronto owners bring us:
- Harrison Nutrition, a fitness and nutrition business whose clients now use an app for workouts, nutrition and video courses, with an admin panel for subscriptions and income. It fits a Toronto coach or clinic that wants a membership.
- Lomesi, which runs its orders, purchasing, inventory by lot and invoicing in one platform. It fits a GTA wholesaler or distributor.
- Wafuz, a management app for wellness businesses with appointments, clients, payments and inventory, and a booking side for their customers. It fits a multi-location practice.
These are projects from our wider portfolio, not Toronto clients. They show how we work and what we ship, not that we have served your city.
How a project starts for a Toronto business
- 1Book a call
30 minutes by video, usually in your morning, to see if we are the right team. If not, we say so.
- 2Kickoff meeting
We map how your business makes money and what to build first. Nothing is charged until it is done.
- 3Pick a plan and start
The first delivery lands in week 1 after the kickoff. The first month is guaranteed: a full refund if it does not convince you, plus 8 bonus tokens in month 1.
